The Montreal Suncor refinery has been in operation for over 60 years. It manufactures a full range of refined petroleum products intended mostly for consumers in the Province of Quebec and Eastern Ontario and distributed under the Petro-Canada trademark through some 380 service stations in Quebec. It also produces asphalt and petrochemical products.
The Montreal refinery produces petrochemical products such as toluene and benzene. It also manufactures xylenes, which constitute one of the basic elements in the polyester chain. This chain also includes three other petrochemical companies located in Montreal’s East End. Together, they contribute to the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the plastic used for manufacturing various products such as bottles or polyester clothing.

10:00 am (Part 1): General presentation of Suncor and the Suncor Montreal Refinery
Welcoming of participants by Suncor representatives, followed by a general presentation of the company and the Montreal Refinery (history, business, regulatory and policy context, operations, etc.). Open discussion with participants.
Coffee and refreshments served.
11:00 am (Part 2): Guided tour of the plant facility
During the tour, you will be introduced to state of the art refining operations, including how three atmospheric units separate crude oil components and how conversion units transformed it into different chemical structures that are blended and end up as gasoline, diesel and aromatics, like xylene which is used in the polyester chain.
12:00 pm: Departure from the Suncor Montreal refinery
12:30 pm: Arrival to HEC Montréal
